A man was mistakenly shot by a police officer in Kaduna on Tuesday morning, June 11, 2024, leading to widespread grief and calls for accountability within the community.

The incident occurred around 6:15 AM in the neighborhood of Barnawa. According to eyewitnesses, the police were conducting a routine patrol in the area following recent reports of increased criminal activities.

The victim, identified as 35-year-old Muhammad Musa, was reportedly on his way home from a night shift when the incident took place.

According to Kaduna State Police Command, the officer involved, whose identity has not yet been released, mistook Muhammad for a suspect involved in a recent robbery.

The officer allegedly fired his weapon in a moment of confusion, hitting Muhammad in the chest. Despite immediate attempts to save him, Muhammad was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We deeply regret this unfortunate incident and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased,” said police spokesman. “The officer in question has been placed on administrative leave pending a full investigation.”

The community has expressed outrage over the shooting, with many residents demanding justice and calling for better training and accountability for police officers. “This is not the first time we are witnessing such an incident,” said Amina, a local resident. “We need our police to protect us, not endanger our lives.”

The family of Muhammad is devastated by the loss. “He was a hardworking man and the breadwinner of our family,” said his widow, struggling to hold back tears. “We demand justice for Muhammad. This should not happen to anyone else.”
