The striking actions of the Academy staff union of universities (ASUU) might not be new to the Nigerian Students, but it might just have a new phase in the coming days.

Since after the last long action observed by the union which has seen students struggle really hard to meet up their academic calendar, the coming one might just be another of its kind.

The union mentioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s-led administration’s failure to appoint governing councils to universities as its reason why an industrial action is required to bring down the ears of government towards the educational sector.

Since the beginning of this administration, the union has continually cried of many demands which they termed the federal government ‘adamant’ of not listening to their cry.

The body during a press briefing in Abuja faulted the 35 per cent salary increment for professors and the 25 per cent salary increment for other academics in the university system claiming that the increment is as a wage award by the federal government that could be withdrawn by the government anytime it deems fit.

Speaking during the briefing, Chairman of the Union, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke said the dissolution of the governing council was illegal.

Osodeke also claimed that the Tinubu-led administration has been given enough time to set things in motion but its continued silence to the academic demands may force the union into another industrial action.
